When I first started out it was easier as I was young and could deal with the stresses and strains of trying to make a business successful. But even in those days I had times when I felt really lethargic and even a little depressed.

I had always been pretty active and all of that stopped when I started to work for myself. It was the old cliché of “I don’t have time to exercise”. Well I am going to recommend to you very strongly that you do find time to exercise regularly as it has some incredible benefits.

For years now I have been exercising regularly every week. It wasn’t easy to fit this in at first but I made it happen because of how great I felt afterwards. I was looking a lot better too which is always a great bonus.

So in this post I am going to talk about the chemicals released during exercise and their benefits. You may not know this but exercise is great for your brain as well as the rest of your body. Most people are aware that exercise is good for their heart and body but few know that it provides benefits to your brain as well. When you participate in exercise a number of essential hormones release in your body and these keep your brain healthy.

There have been numerous studies about how exercise affects the brain and they have measured the effect on mood, memory and a whole host of other things. All of them concluded that regular exercise has a positive effect on the brain. Let’s take a look at the important chemicals released during exercise and their benefits:


People that suffer from depression often have a shortfall of serotonin. During your exercise routine your body will increase serotonin production levels and this is awesome for your brain and your mind.

Having low serotonin levels leads to a viscous circle of events. You feel lethargic and lacking in energy so the last thing you are thinking about is going down to the gym and getting a good workout. The only way to break through this cycle of lethargy is to force your way through it and get started.

There are probably millions of people out there taking anti depressant drugs to boost their serotonin levels. All these people need to do is to get off the couch and start a regular exercise routine. A good workout will naturally boost your serotonin levels. Aerobic exercises are best for raising your serotonin levels.


If you want to be a high achiever then dopamine is your best friend. It is the chemical that will motivate you to achieve everything and overcome those obstacles which frequently stand in your way.

It is very common to not have enough dopamine to stimulate your brain and to get you into action mode. Exercise is a great way to build your levels of dopamine and change your mood from low energy to high energy. Low dopamine levels are common with people suffering from depression. Make sure you get as much dopamine as you can.


If your workout is fairly intense then you will increase the production of Norepinephrine in your body. Your brain and your adrenal glands will assist in the higher levels of production. Norepinephrine is a chemical that is good for your brain and it is also a hormone. With increased levels of norepinephrine you will be more focused and alert.

It will also help to boost your memory and your ability to retrieve things from your memory a lot more easily. This is a super natural chemical that is generated from a good workout and will help you when you need to give presentations etc. So make sure that you exercise hard before these kinds of events.

There has been a ton of research on how exercise, and norepinephrine in particular, improves your attention, concentration and focus. After a good workout you will find that it’s a lot easier to avoid distractions and get those important things done. Imagine how focused you would be if you performed short exercise sessions throughout the day?

These days it is very easy to get distracted and lose your focus. If you suffer from this then exercise really can be your best friend. There have been studies showing that just 20 minutes of exercise can greatly increase focus so get at it!


There is no better high than that produced by endorphins. A lot of long distance runners experience this but you don’t have to run long distances to release endorphins. Endorphins get a lot of credit for making you feel good during and after a workout but they are probably working alongside dopamine and serotonin to give you that buzz.

If you have not exercised for a while then it will be tough to start with but once you start releasing endorphins it all becomes a lot easier. You will get used to the “high” that regular exercise provides and want to do it more and more. Endorphins will also help to calm you down and reduce anxiety as well as relieve any pains that you may have.


You may not have heard of BDNF before. It is an acronym for brain derived neurotrophic factor and it is one of the most important chemicals for your brain. When your body releases BDNF it will form new connections between your nerve cells and it will repair any damaged nerve cells.

Your memory will certainly benefit from BDNF. When you workout you will speed up the production of BDNF as much as 3 times. This amazing chemical will protect your brain from injury and will help to preserve your cognitive function.

Start your Exercise Routine right away

I cannot speak highly enough about regular exercise. You are looking for freedom via your property business right? Well make time for exercise. You are in control here and you don’t have a boss to answer to. Don’t use the “haven’t got time” excuse. You don’t have to join a gym, you can exercise at home or in the park.

Getting started is always tough. It was for me too. But I am telling you once those brain enhancing chemicals get going in your body you will absolutely love it. There are very few other experiences that come anywhere near the high of exercising.
